Mental Health and Crisis Support

Nurse Police Team

In May 2023, the Windsor Police Service partnered with Windsor Regional Hospital to launch the Nurse Police Team (NPT) program.

This project pairs nursing professionals with frontline police officers to respond to non-emergency, substance use-related incidents. The program connects vulnerable members of the community to the supports they need and steers them away from emergency rooms and the criminal justice system.

Crisis Response Team

Windsor Police and Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare announced the launch of the Crisis Response Team (CRT) in May 2024.

The CRT program pairs frontline police officers with trained social workers from the hospital. These teams offer expert support to de-escalate crisis situations, ensuring compassionate and effective responses to people in need.

Form 2 (Order for Examination)

If you’re worried that a family member or friend may need urgent mental health support, a Form 2 (Order for Examination) can help. This process is focused on care and safety and will not result in criminal charges.

What is a Form 2 (Order for Examination)?

A Form 2 is a legal document under Ontario’s Mental Health Act that allows police to bring someone to a hospital for a mental health assessment when specific legal criteria are met.

Who Qualifies for a Form 2?

Individuals may qualify if there are concerns about their safety or the safety of others due to a potential mental health crisis, and the criteria outlined in the Mental Health Act are met.

How Does It Work?

  1. Get the Form 2: Download the Form 2 package below, print it, and complete it. A person can also obtain the Form 2 at the courthouse directly.

  2. Attend the Ontario Court of Justice: Submit your completed form at the court counter at 200 Chatham St. E., Windsor. (The counter is open Monday - Friday from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.)

  3. Justice of the Peace Review: A Justice of the Peace will review the form and may sign it.

  4. Submit to Windsor Police: Take the signed form to Windsor Police Headquarters (150 Goyeau St.). A police officer can then apprehend the individual for a mental health assessment under the Mental Health Act.
