Auto Theft Unit delivers results: 79% of stolen vehicles recovered

The Windsor Police Service’s Auto Theft Unit is making major strides in the fight against vehicle theft, recovering 79% of vehicles reported stolen so far this year. This milestone highlights the team’s growing impact as part of the Service’s ongoing effort to curb auto theft across Windsor and Amherstburg.

Launched in 2024 through a $900,000 grant from the Government of Ontario, the Auto Theft Unit commits three full-time officers to auto theft investigations and community outreach while preserving frontline patrol resources. (This funding is part of the Preventing Auto Thefts grant program, which allocated $18 million to 21 police services across the province.)

Since its launch, the team’s impact has been significant. Vehicle thefts are down 17% compared to 2024 and 27% compared to 2021. In addition to the high recovery rate, 24% of investigations have led to criminal charges, a substantial improvement from previous years.

“These numbers represent real progress,” said Deputy Chief Jason Crowley. “They reflect the impact of a dedicated team that can target repeat offenders, identify problem areas, and deliver meaningful results for our community.”

Alongside enforcement, the Auto Theft Unit continues to focus on education initiatives. Officers work closely with local dealerships and community groups to raise awareness and help residents protect their vehicles.

“Auto theft often remains a crime of opportunity,” said Staff Sergeant Charles Campbell, who oversees the unit. “So far this year, two-thirds of stolen vehicles were unlocked, and one in eight had keys left inside. Awareness is the first line of defence, and our officers are committed to helping residents take those extra steps to secure their vehicles.”

Deputy Chief Crowley added that the provincial funding has been instrumental in achieving these results. “This investment gave us the resources to make an immediate difference,” he said. “Through awareness, enforcement, and collaboration, we’re continuing to drive these numbers down and make Windsor and Amherstburg safer for everyone.”
