Police urge public vigilance after distraction thefts
The Windsor Police Service is warning the community to stay vigilant following two recent distraction thefts targeting jewelry.
A distraction theft occurs when suspects divert a person’s attention, often through conversation or unsolicited gifts, in order to steal jewelry, wallets, phones, or other valuables.
In the first incident (case #25-91808), two women approached a man in a South Windsor parking lot and tossed costume jewelry into his vehicle to create a distraction. When the victim looked away, the suspects pulled the gold chain from his neck before fleeing the scene.
In the second incident (case #25-96263), a female victim walking on Grand Boulevard was approached by two women in a black Lincoln MKX. The suspects engaged the victim in conversation, and one exited the vehicle to offer her two necklaces as a gift. After placing these cheap necklaces around the victim’s neck, the suspect forcibly removed the victim’s own gold necklace and fled the scene in the vehicle.
Police believe these incidents involve two different pairs of suspects.
"Distraction thefts are opportunistic crimes that rely on deception and quick action by the suspects,” said Constable Bianca Jackson. “We urge community members to be cautious when strangers offer unsolicited gifts or start unusual conversations. Never accept items from unknown people and report suspicious behaviour to the police immediately."
